Huawei teases new Watch 5 with focus on finger-based health tracking

Huawei has set the date for its next big wearable reveal. Mark it in your calendar folks – May 15th in Berlin. A teaser image and short video clip posted to X suggest that the Watch 5 will be the headline act, with a brand new health sensor getting top billing.

A mystery sensor

The 8-second video clip is cryptic. A close-up silhouette of a watch is shown, with a finger tapping on a button-like sensor located along the side of the case. That’s followed by floating orbs and the tagline “Tap the Next.” The official post reads “Feel the future of digital health at your fingertips,” which sounds very much like a hint toward some form of advanced biometric tracking.

What exactly that new sensor does remains unconfirmed. Could be tied to non-invasive blood glucose tracking? Do the bubbles represent glucose molecules? No one has nailed this yet without a sensor patch or implant. So it’s an outside chance.

Blood pressure monitoring seems a more likely candidate at this stage, especially since Huawei already offers cuffless blood pressure readings on some of its previous devices like the Watch D. The bubbles could visually suggest blood flow or vascular pressure. The position of the sensor and the gesture shown in the video suggest you’ll need to rest your finger against it, rather than press a button. This fits the method often used for pulse wave velocity or blood pressure readings.

Or perhaps the orbs could represent water molecules or electrolytes. Some companies are working on optical methods to detect hydration levels through the skin. But again, there’s an outside chance of this.

The sensor itself, as seen in the promotional photo, looks like a blend between a classic button and a pill-shaped optical element. It appears slightly recessed, possibly to guide finger placement. The crown above it hints that this is still a fully-featured smartwatch, not a pared-down fitness tracker.

Last month, the upcoming Huawei wearable appeared in the UAE’s TDRA database. That certification confirmed the model name and cleared it for sale in the region. And now we know the exact date of the Watch 5 launch.

Building on a strong foundation

To understand what might be coming, it’s worth revisiting the Watch 4 lineup. The vanilla and Pro variants are feature-packed wearables that don’t skimp on materials or performance. Titanium alloy casings, sapphire glass displays, independent 4G support, and full GNSS navigation make them solid all-rounders.

From a health perspective, the current series already includes ECG, continuous SpO2, temperature tracking, respiratory rate, and stress monitoring. You also get Huawei’s AI-driven running coach and over 100 sports modes. Battery life ranges from 3 to 4.5 days in normal mode, depending on the model, and can be stretched to over two weeks in power saver mode.

The key differentiator with the Watch 5 could be how Huawei builds on these health features with something new. It’s worth noting, the company hasn’t named the device in official teaser text. But the hashtag #HuaweiWatch5 does the job.

Given how heavily the teaser leans into the sensor, we expect this will be the centerpiece of the launch. The last device in the series was released back in 2023 so it is high time for an upgrade. Interestingly, The Watch Fit 4 has also been spotted last month in certification databases so that one may launch soon, as well. Perhaps alongside the Watch 5.
